Where the name Locust came from
The rural city of Locust of today began as a passageway for farmers traveling to other countries to sell their goods. As more farmers camped at the crossroads, a community started and acquired the literal name Crossroads in 1860.
When the community qualified to have its own post office in 1869, they decided to change the name of the town. During the deliberation, a local named Maggie Howell saw the luscious locust tree beside the rice fields outside the window and suggested the name Locust Level. Since then, it became the name of the community and became Locust when the town decided to remove the word Level in 1894.
How Locust started as a community
In the early 1800s, Locust served as a stopover for farmers who have travel difficulties on their way to different parts of Charlotte. When the residents of Stanly County realized that the sources of water were too far apart, they decided to build a well in the middle of the community. The well was able to provide sufficient water supply for several households and their livestock around the area.
Since then, commercial and residential properties have been established and began the central square. Farming was the main livelihood in Locust during the 1890s, so most of the first stores were general merchandise, cotton gin production facilities, and a blacksmith shop.
