Locust Dentist Shares Tips in Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth sprout through the gums during the teen years or young adulthood. Some people are not bothered much by their eruption, while others feel discomfort similar to that of young children cutting their first teeth. Although not everyone has their wisdom teeth removed, many people do when these teeth crowd out regular permanent teeth and begin to cause pain or crooked alignment. Our Locust NC dentist can advise whether your wisdom teeth should be removed. If that’s the recommendation, here are a few steps to prepare for the procedure.
The procedure will be relatively comfortable.
Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure experienced by countless people. It is very safe, with few risks or side effects. Your cosmetic dentist can refer you to a specialist who has extensive experience with tooth extractions. During the procedure, you’ll be given local anesthesia, much like that received for a tooth filling, or a mild form of sedation that will keep you comfortable and unconscious during the extraction. Afterward, the doctor can prescribe over-the-counter or prescription-strength pain medication if needed.
You may need a driver to take you home.
If you have more than a local anesthetic, you will not be allowed to drive after the procedure, and someone will need to drive you home. It is a good idea to have someone stay with you for a couple of hours or check on you later that day to make sure you are comfortable and to help with anything you might need.
You should plan on resting a day or two after the extraction.
Following wisdom teeth removal, take it easy the rest of the day. Your dentist will advise you not to get involved with vigorous physical activities until your mouth has begun to heal. While you probably won’t need to stay in bed, you will probably want to do minimal activities until the anesthesia wears off. The surgeon will explain what to do or avoid for the first few days.
Most people come through wisdom tooth extractions with no complications. Just follow the dentist’s orders and don’t overdo it, and you’ll soon be back to regular activities.
